Day 1: To Pike's Peak State Park, McGregor, Iowa

We were glad we spent the night at Diane's house in Illinois before the big trip, because we had some trouble with the camper. Daryl and has Dad decided to remove a special stinger hitch that Leroy had installed, because the camper was not handling well with it. We were able to leave it at Diane and Bradd's house, so that was good. We took off after lunch and had a decent first day of driving. We made multiple stops, first to fill the propane, then for restroom, then for gas. I hope we become a bit more efficient at some of this after we get in the swing of it, but for the first day it was pretty slow moving. Daryl and his Dad drove the truck and camper, while I drove the van with Elaine, Alex and Ben. We had "Harry Potter: The Order of the Phoenix" on audio book, so that helped pass the time. Upon arrival at the campsite, we settled in after some initial stress, and went to explore the place. Our campsite was on the Mississippi River and boy was that an awesome view! Who knew Iowa was this scenic?

There was an overlook point with views of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers. Then, there were hiking trails through the woods and down to a waterfall. It would have been more beautiful of there had been more than just a trickle of water, but, hey, the boys had fun climbing along the ledge all the way behind the falls!

We had electric hookups at the campsite and were right opposite the bathhouse, too, so it was a good night. Thanks, Diane for the left over pulled pork, it was a good supper!
